72 Townsend St Building History:

According to SB Architects, the site is a former Grain Warehouse, which was the oldest warehouse that survived the 1906 earthquake and fire. The historic façade of this 28,000 SQFT warehouse has been incorporated into 72 Townsend’s modern building.

72 Townsend St Building Design:

The building is designed by SB Architects, the firm behind “Santana Row” in San Jose, “Strata at Mission Bay”, and many other projects worldwide. According to the architect, the material used in the building is common to the neighborhood, which creates a modern interpretation of the existing architectural vocabulary.

Prior to 2008 market downturn, the project at 72 Townsend was entitled by West Bay Builders; however, it was leased to Federated Media for a couple of years, until the market recovery. In 2013, KB Home stepped in to start building the condos at 72 Townsend. Although KB Home has several projects in numerous cities in the Bay Area – such as San Jose, Milpitas, Livermore, etc. – 72 Townsend was its first development in San Francisco. After 72 Townsend, KB Home started The District at 2655 Bush St Condos in Lower Pacific Heights, San Francisco.
